Ex-Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh to contest from stronghold Patiala in Meeting polls

The announcement from Amarinder comes round three weeks after he formally resigned from the Congress, ending his twenty years outdated affiliation with the occasion

Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh will contest the upcoming Meeting elections from his household stronghold of Patiala.

“I will contest from Patiala. Patiala is with us for 400 years and I am not going to leave it due to Sidhu,” Amarinder introduced on his Fb web page, as he focused his rival and Congress’ Punjab unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu.

By “400 years”, Amarinder invoked the legacy of his royal household, which dominated the erstwhile princely state of Patiala. The Meeting seat was received by him within the final Meeting elections, defeating BJP’s Basic (retd) JJ Singh by a margin of over 60,000 votes.

Cumulatively, Amarinder has represented Patiala within the state Meeting 4 instances in his political profession, whereas, his spouse was an MLA from the seat for 3 years between 2014 and 2017.

The 80-year-old political veteran, who led the Congress to a two-third majority victory within the 2017 polls, had resigned because the chief minister in September following a bitter intra-party feud between him and Sidhu.

Amarinder had subsequently introduced his resolution to go away the Congress and float his personal outfit – the Punjab Lok Congress.

The brand new occasion, whose software for registration has been despatched to the Election Fee, will tie-up with Akali factions and the Bharatiya Janata Get together (BJP), Amarinder had stated.

Notably, the 117-seat Punjab Meeting would go to polls in early 2022. Whereas the Election Fee is but to announce the dates, it’s anticipated that the polls could be held round January-February.
